Halal Music

The music in Islam is halal. I’ve heard and read some hadiths about music, dancing, and singing, which is allowed in Islam. The hadiths said "as long as there is no drinking going or inappropriate things around" etc. and some hadiths prove this is true. Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w) was not against music. Although, there are some Muslims who may question the accuracy of the hadiths and believe music is haram.  They may believe that Muslims are looking for ways to justify things that are in their own interest or can benefit themselves in some way. There is not a single Noble Verse in the Noble Quran that prohibits music.  In fact, music and songs are allowed in the Noble Quran.  Some Muslims, however, claim that Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him did prohibit music.  The section below actually proves and indicates that music is halal and it is from the Sayings of Prophet Muhammad himself.

Muslims must also remember that when Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h) reached the Holy City of Madina from the Holy City of Mecca with his best friend Abu Bakr; may Allah Almighty always be pleased with him, the Muslims played music and sang the famous Islamic song "Talaa El-Badru Alayna" which means "The full moon had come upon us."

There is another hadith which proofs that music is halal. 'Aishah narrated that during the days of Mina, on the day of 'Eid al-Adha, two girls were with her, singing and playing on a hand drum. The Prophet (peace be on him) was present, listening to them with his head under a shawl. Abu Bakr then entered and scolded the girls. The Prophet (peace be on him), uncovering his face, told him, "Let them be, Abu Bakr. These are the days of 'Eid." (Reported by al-Bukhari and Muslim.)

There's more hadith about music being halal. For instance, `A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated, “Allah's Messenger (p.b.u.h), came to her house while two girls were singing beside A'ishah the songs of Buath (a story about the pre-Islamic war between the two tribes of the Ansar).” The Prophet (p.b.u.h) lay down and turned his face to the other side. Then Abu Bakr came and spoke to A'ishah harshly saying, “Musical instruments of Satan near the Prophet (p.b.u.h)?” Thereupon, Allah's Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) turned his face towards him and said, “leave them. When Abu Bakr became inattentive, A'ishah signaled to those girls to go out and they left.” (Reported by Al-Bukhari)

Many Muslim people consider music halal as long as it brings a positive and constructive message.  Music is a powerful tool which sooth the mind and spirit.  There are even Islamic musicians who sing about Islam, the Prophet (p.b.u.h), and the greatness of Allah. Throughout Islamic history, there have been instances that music has been allowed, which is documented by many hadiths.  Music can be a way to transfer moral, Godly and Islamic messages to the listeners.  However, if the music has bad and immoral information it would be considered haram.
