End punctuation

A period is at the end of a statement.

Ex. Jennifer is so pretty.

Ex. The flower was colorful.

A exclamation mark is at the end of every sentence that is showing excitement, shouting, or yelling.

Ex."Hey! Come back!"the women yelled.

Ex."Your house is on fire!"Mr. Marino shouted.

A question mark is always at the end of a interrogative sentence.

Ex. "What is your name?"the teacher asked.

Ex. What did you do?


Now lets learn some type of sentences!

A declarative sentence is a sentence that ends with a period.

Ex. I like the season, Summer.

Ex. I hate the season, Winter.

 A imperative sentence ends with a period and makes a command or a request.

Ex. Give me more water.

Ex. I want you to clean your room.

 A exclamatory sentence shows strong feelings and ends with an explanation point.

Ex.  I am so sad, my cat has died!

Ex. That was the best movie I ever saw!


Rules of commas, semi colons, and colons!

A semicolon substitutes a conjunction when the relation between two clauses are very clear.

Ex. I played football the other day; now I am very tired.

Ex. This test is very difficult; it's only fit for advanced students.

A colon is used after a greeting in a business letter.

Ex. Dear Mr. George:

Ex. Dear Boss:

A comma is used to separate items in a series.

Ex. I want cookies, chocolate, and candy.

Ex. I hate Mary, Sam, and Brianna.


Apostrophes!

An apostrophe connects two words and turns them to conjunctions.

Ex. I can't do any more homework, I need a break.

Ex. My cat doesn't like you.

Ex. Don't you like school?


Quotation marks!

 

A qoutation mark is to set apart a speakers words from the fest of the sentence.

Ex. "Where are you going?"she asked.

Ex. "I like reading books," he said.

Ex. "Sam, you're in big trouble!" he roared.


Fragment and Run-on sentences

A fragment is sentence that does not express complete thought and does not have a subject or predicate.

Ex. Hi, my name is.

Ex. In the store.

Ex. I like.

Ex. Because I like animals.


A run on sentence is two or more sentences that run along with each other without any punctuation.

Ex. I like school I like music l hate cats.

Ex. You hit me why did you hit me.

Ex. The dog was chasing the cat why was the dog chasing the cat?

Ex. My name is Saba I am so smart I like to read books.


Capitalization Rules!

  The capitalization rule is to always uppercase the beginning of a sentence or a proper noun.

Ex. His name was Matt.

Ex.  Chicago is a city.

Ex. Her name is Selena.

Ex. I was born in Europe.
